Walking in Worship

THE ONLY REAL THING THAT WE HAVE THAT GOD WANTS IS OUR WORSHIP

THE PROBLEM OF MESSED UP WORSHIP IS ECCLESIASTICAL IDOLATRY:

  • GOD OF PREFERENCE:WE LOVE THE WAY WE WORSHIP MORE THAN WE LOVE THE GOD WE ARE WORSHIPPING.  YOUR SAVIOR IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR STYLE.

  • GOD OF DENOMINATION:WE LOVE OUR CHURCH MORE THAN WE LOVE GOD AND WE SERVE BUILDING MORE THAN WE SERVE THE KINGDOM

  • GOD OF EMOTION:WE LOVE THE FEELING OF WORSHIP MORE THAN WE LOVE THE TRUTH WE ARE WORSHIPPING

  • GOD OF SELFISH PRIORITIES:WE LOVE THE GOD THAT FITS OUR BOX OF CONVENIENCE BUT RESPOND WITH REJECTION IF HE CALLS US TO DISCOMFORT

  • GOD OF TIMETABLE:WE LOVE THE GOD OF A SUNDAY MORNING EXPERIENCE AND REJECT THE TRUTH THAT WORSHIP IS NOT JUST ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE ITS ABOUT YOUR LIFE

TRUTH:MOST OF THE PROBLEM WITH WORSHIP IS THAT WHAT WE THINK ABOUT WORSHIP IS NOT REALLY WORSHIP:

Exodus 33:12-19 (ESV)

12  Moses said to the LORD, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’
13  Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.”
14  And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15  And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
16  For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”
17  And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
18  Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
19  And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

  1.  WORSHIP SEEKS TO SEE GOD’S HEART – VVS. 13-18

  1. WORSHIP SEEKS TO SEE GOD WORK – CH. 33:10-34:5-7

  1.   WORSHIP LONGS TO SEE GOD CHANGE – CH. 34

1 Samuel 4:15-22 (ESV)
15  Now Eli was ninety-eight years old and his eyes were set so that he could not see.
16  And the man said to Eli, “I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today.” And he said, “How did it go, my son?”
17  He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
18  As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
19  Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, about to give birth. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her.
20  And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention.
21  And she named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22  And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

QUESTION:WHY WAS IT SO SIGNIFICANT THAT THE ARK OF GOD WAS TAKEN & WHAT DID THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE DEPARTING OF GOD’S GLORY?

The Symbolism of the Ark

TRUTH:EVERY ASPECT OF THE ARK POINTED TO JESUS.

  • The acacia wood symbolized our Lord's humanity.

  • The gold overlay denoted His deity.

  • The Law inside the Ark pictured Jesus with the Law of God in His heart,

  • The pot of manna spoke of Jesus as the Bread of Life or our life sustainer.

  • Aaron's rod that budded obviously prophesied the resurrection.

  • The mercy seat was also a symbol that pointed to the Messiah. It was representative of the fact that the work of Jesus on the Cross would cover the Law of God with His mercy.

TRUTH:IN THE SAME WAY THE PHILISTINE STOLE THE SYMBOL OF WHAT POINTED GOD’S PEOPLE TO JESUS, SATAN IS BLINDING THE EYES OF GOD’S CHURCH OF THE VERY SYSTEM THAT POINTS US TO JESUS - WORSHIP
