THE SOURCE OF SATAN’S SNARE

QUESTION:  DOES IT MATTER WHAT PEOPLE THINK OR SAY ABOUT US AS FOLLOWERS OF JESUS?

Ecclesiastes 7:1 (KJV) 1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

Proverbs 22:1 (KJV) 1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

TRUTH:ANYTIME GOD’S SERVANT BRINGS PUBLIC REPROACH TO GOD’S NAME, IT WILL HINDER GOD’S WORK.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (KJV) 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

ANSWER:  YES.    OUR LIFESTYLE EITHER BRINGS GLORY OR REPROACH TO GOD’S NAME.

TRUTH:THE ONLY JESUS SOME WILL EVER SEE IS THE JESUS IN ME.

There are many sources to Satan’s Snare, but listed are four of the following that trip up many of which we need to stay on guard against. These were given from a message I heard years ago that are still very true today.

  1. SELFISHNESS/PRIDE – Prov. 6:16-19

Pride is defined as “An inordinate amount of self-esteem.”

The synonyms for the word PRIDE are not pretty; they are conceit, arrogance, and boastfulness.

Pride is puffed up, stiff-necked and stuck-up.

  1. THE CONSEQUENCES OF PRIDE:

Proverbs 16:18-19 (KJV) 18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. 19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Illustration:

Prodigal Son – Went from the PALACE TO THE PIG PEN

Nebuchadnezzar – Went from feasting in the Kingdom to eating with the Cattle.

Lucifer – Went from living in Christ’s presence to experiencing EXPULSION FROM HEAVEN

Adam & Eve – Went from LIVING IN PERFECTION TO DYING IN SIN.

  1. THE IDENTITY OF PRIDE:

  • Pride blinds itself to its own presence.

  • Pride tells us that we have done all that we could, even though our walk doesn’t show it.

  • Pride is the forerunner of all sins. – CAIN & ABEL

PRACTICAL:

  • Pride whispers to the over-spender “You deserve it”, even though you’re maxed out on your credit cards, but “you deserve it.”

  • Pride whispers to the Alcoholic “go ahead you can stop anytime you want.” Do a little bit more Cocaine, you can stop anytime you want.

  • Pride whispers to the Control Freak “If you don’t orchestrate their life who will.”

  • Pride whispers to the Blamer “It’s the Pastor’s fault”, it’s the Deacons fault for why you act like you do. It’s your parents fault, It’s your ex-wife, or your ex-husbands fault.

  • Pride says “it’s not me, but “it’s them.”

  • Pride says THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN LOOK GOOD IS TO PUT OTHERS DOWN.

  1. THE SINFULNESS OF PRIDE:

  • Pride is giving ourselves the credit for something that God has accomplished.

  • Pride is taking the glory that belongs to God alone and keeping it for ourselves.

  •  Pride is essentially self-worship.

1 Corinthians 4:7 (KJV) 7 For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?

  1.  SILVER/GREED – Gen. 13:10-12

TRUTH:“Some say, When I get _____________, then I’ll be happy”

Eccles. 5:10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

Genesis 13:10-12  And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. [11] Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. [12] Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

  1. SLOTH/LAZINESS – 1 Thess. 4:11-12

        • Becomes servant to others – Prov. 12:24

        • Life is full of troubles – Prov. 15:19

      1. SOLUTION TO LAZINESS:

        • Take advantage of every opportunity = Eph. 5:15-16

        • God always blesses hard work – 1 Thess. 4:11-12

  1. IMMORALITY – 2 Sam. 11:1-3

2 Samuel 11:1-3 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
