The Right Response of Repentance

As we press forward at Calvary in our week of “Thirst” with Life Action Ministry, I though it appropriate to share some thoughts on repentance because one cannot have full RESTORATION UNTIL THERE HAS BEEN FULL REPENTANCE.

In his book I Surrender, Patrick Morley writes that the church's integrity problem is in the misconception "that we can add Christ to our lives, but not subtract sin. It is a change in belief without a change in behavior." He goes on to say, "We expect REVIVAL without REPENTANCE."

DEFINITION OF REPENTANCE:  L. Berkhoff, Systematic Theology, p. 487.

According to Scripture repentance is wholly an inward act, and should not be confounded with the change of life that proceeds from it. Confession of sin and Separation of wrongs are fruits of repentance.

In Hosea 6:1-2, the prophet Hosea calls out to the people of Israel. They have wandered far away from the Lord and he issues a call for them to COME back to God. It is a call for both PERSONAL and NATIONAL revival. Israel had forsaken the way of the Lord and they had turned away from Him to worship the idols and false gods of the Canaanites. This invitation is a call for them to repent of their sins and to turn their hearts back to the one true God.

BIBLICAL DEFINITION OF REPENTANCE:

Proverbs 28:1321st Century King James Version (KJ21)

13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

TRUTH:  THE RIGHT RESPONSE OF REPENTANCE IS THE RECIPE TO REVIVAL

3 TRUTHS REGARDING REPENTANCE:

  1.  REPENTANCE IS THE RESPONSE TO GOD’S REQUEST – VS. 1

6 Come, and let us return unto the Lord; for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up.

The people of Israel had every reason to serve and honor the Lord by their lives. Yet, for no reason, they had abandoned Him and turn to follow other gods.

The phrase “let us return” implies that a closer relationship than the current relationship once existed. There had been a time in Israel’s past when they were closer to the Lord than they were now. They had become a wayward, wicked people.

QUESTION:  HAS THERE EVER BEEN A TIME YOU HAVE BEEN CLOSER TO GOD THAN YOU ARE RIGHT NOW?

  1.  REPENTANCE IS THE WORSHIP PLAN FOR A WAYWARD PEOPLE – VS. 1

6 Come, and let us return unto the LORD; for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up.

  1. REPENTANCE OF MAN TRIGGERS A RESPONSE FROM GOD – VVS. 1-2

Hosea 6:1-2 21st Century King James Version (KJ21)

6 Come, and let us return unto the Lord; for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up.2 After two days will He revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight.

REVIVAL: One person defined Revival as follows: “TO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT I HAVE PEACE THAT I BRING GOD GLORY THOUGH I LIVE IN THE CONSTANT STATE OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD.”

ILLUSTRATION:CHARLES SPURGEON WROTE IN THE 1800’S:

“For a church to be constantly needing revival is the indication of much sin, for if it were sound before the Lord it would remain in the condition into which a revival would uplift its members. A church should be a camp of soldiers, not an hospital of invalids. But there is exceedingly much difference between what ought be and what is, and consequently many of God's people are in so sad a state that the very fittest prayer for them is for revival. Some Christians are, spiritually, but barely alive.” – Charles Spurgeon
