Satisfaction

In his book Facing Loneliness, J. Oswald Sanders writes, "The round of pleasure or the amassing of wealth are but vain attempts to escape from the persistent ache...The millionaire is usually a lonely man and the comedian is often more unhappy than his audience."

TRUTH: NO AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN RELEASE THE PAIN OF BAD CHOICES

Ecclesiastes 5:10 10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.

As one writer said, “When you have money – you want more. When you get a raise, you want a bigger one. What we have is almost never enough. What is sad is that we spend so much of our lives chasing after something, only to find that it is, as the verse says, “vanity”.”

Isaiah 55:2 2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy?

TRUTH:GOD PROMISED TO SUPPLY OUR NEEDS, NOT OUR GREEDS.

TRUTH:THERE IS A LONGING IN EVERY PERSON’S HEART THAT ONLY JESUS CAN SATISFY.

CHALLENGE:THIS MORNING, LET’S DISCOVER LIFE BEYOND THE CREDIT CARD & CHECKBOOK.

  1. TRUTHS REGARDING SATISFACTION THAT FINANCES BRING:

  1. THE ESSENCE OF LIFE IS NOT OWNERSHIP, BUT MANAGEMENT – 1 Chr. 29:11

1 Chronicles 29:11 11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all.

  1. TRUE SATISFACTION IS BEING CONTENT WITH WHAT YOU DO HAVE; NOT BECOMING DESIROUS OF WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE.– 1 Tim. 6:8-10

1 Timothy 6:8 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 1 Timothy 6:10 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  1. WE ARE MADE RICH IN EVERY WAY TO BE GENEROUS ON EVERY OCCASION.– 2 Cor. 9:11

2 Corinthians 9:11 11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.

NOTICE THAT REAL SATISFACTION THROUGH THE LIFE OF WILLIAM BORDEN IS NOT IN FINANCES BUT IN FOLLOWING JESUS:

In 1904 William Borden, the heir of the famous Borden dairy estate, graduated from high school in Chicago. As a graduation gift, his parents sent him on a cruise around the world. While on this cruise, God began to open William’s eyes and heart to the masses of unsaved people around the world. William wrote to his mother about his desire to be a missionary. In one of his early letters he wrote, “I think God is calling me to be a missionary.” In his final letter he wrote, “I know God is calling me to be a missionary.” One friend expressed amazement that William was throwing his life away by choosing to become a missionary.

When he returned home, William enrolled in Yale University where he was instrumental in starting campus prayer and Bible study groups and evangelism initiatives. While in school, William renounced his fortune in favor of missions and wrote two words in the flyleaf of his Bible – “NO RESERVES.”

God wanted William to go to China where he hoped to work with Muslims. When he graduated from Yale, he had many lucrative job offers, including the opportunity to take over the multi-million dollar family business. However, he was determined to fulfill God’s call to serve as a missionary. Once again, he opened his Bible to the flyleaf and wrote two more words – “NO RETREATS.”

William set sail for China on December 17, 1912. He stopped in Egypt to study Arabic so that he would be better equipped to work with Muslims. While in Egypt, William contracted spinal meningitis and died on April 9, 1913 at the age of twenty-five. Years of training, a promising future, and William never made it to China. Charlie Campbell, one of William’s college friends, received his Bible after his death. When he opened it he found what William had written in the flyleaf. In addition to the words “No Reserves” and “No Retreats” that William had jotted down during his college days, he found two more words that William had written before he died – “NO REGRETS.”

THE WAY TO STAND TALL AT JUDGMENT DAY IS TO LIVE WITH, “NO RESERVES, NO RETREATS, AND NO REGRETS.
