Recognizing a Real Friend

So, what is a real friend?  One person said, “A friend--a true friend--the first person who comes in when the whole world has gone out.”

Another said, “A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you today just the way you are.”

One of the best examples of genuine friendship observed in the Bible was that of David and Jonathan.  One person described their friendship as follows:

“As David moved through the days of his life, he was a man truly blessed by the Lord. One of the most precious and profound of the relationships David enjoyed was the friendship he had with King Saul’s son Jonathan.  Jonathan was a true of God to young David.  In fact, the very name “Jonathan” means “Jehovah has given.”  Jonathan was strategically placed in David’s life at the very time David needed a genuine friend.  Jonathan proved to be the greatest and dearest friend that David would know in his entire life.”

In 2 Samuel 18, we see 2 qualities of good friends:

  1. REAL FRIENDS GIVE UP CROWNS FOR CARE

2 Samuel 18:4 (ESV) 4  The king said to them, “Whatever seems best to you I will do.” So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.

  1. REAL FRIENDS LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY.

2 Samuel 18:3 (ESV) 3  But the men said, “You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.”

I do not know where you are in your journey of life but the truth is the day will come when you need a friend because EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY.  Unfortunately, when this day comes for many, we find out much about who our friends are not before we find out who our friends are.  One thing for all to know the best friend one could ever have is a Friend named Jesus.  He truly sticks closer than a brother and loves us like family.

Join us this Sunday at Calvary as we conclude the series entitled, “A NEW YOU” with the message, “A FRIEND OF GOD.” We are also celebrating Friend Day and are encouraging everyone to be present and bring a friend with you as we look closely at the qualities of true friends of God.

REMEMBER, GOD LOVES YOU AND SO DO WE AT CALVARY!!!!!
