GODLY IN THE MIDST OF GODLESSNESS

How do we live Godly in a world that is absolutely Godless?

Howard Green wrote this:

“Imagine the world with no rules, accountability, or consequences for evil actions? This image is one where people take a life with no remorse. It is a place where life savings are greedily stolen, women and children are abandoned, and even basic respect that was afforded to a mother and father is absent. This place of our worst imaginings is one fraught with lawless, heartless, and treacherous people who are concerned with no one but themselves. That would be a world where the concept of love is foreign, while brutality, slander, and darkness become the norm. This is not a description of total societal, economic, or geopolitical breakdown sometime in the distant future. It is an accurate analysis of the condition of our world at this moment. This is how a majority of people are living life. These are the direct results of one fact: Godlessness is reaching epidemic proportions.”

My heart was recently touched and challenged through a short devotional by Charles Stanley in which he wrote the following about the manner in which Daniel was able to be Godly in a Godless world:

“Daniel and his friends faced the same dilemma we do--how to live a holy life in a godless culture. At one time, our society readily accepted Christian values and standards, but that era is quickly passing. Our challenge today is to live under God's authority while remaining in submission to the law of the land. At times we are forced to choose between the two, but if we'll seek the Lord's guidance before marching defiantly forward, He may open an alternative approach for us.

Had Daniel bluntly declared, "I won't eat this food!" he wouldn't have lasted long, and we wouldn't have the book of Daniel in the Bible. But the Lord gave him the wisdom to humbly seek permission from the person who was in a position of authority over him. God honored his commitment and provided a way for him to live righteously in a pagan world.

We tend to hold up Daniel and his three friends as extraordinary people who lived amazing lives. But have you ever wondered what the Lord could do in the life of an ordinary person like you? The determining factor is not the greatness of the individual but, rather, his commitment to a God who can do remarkable things in a life fully devoted to Him. That's the kind of people our Lord is looking for.

Although we don't know all that God could do in our lives if we'd radically commit ourselves to Him, the thought of missing out on His plans should be enough to motivate us to obey. You don't want to arrive in heaven and discover you forfeited blessings because you weren't fully devoted to Him.”

From my heart to yours, there are several observations I see in the life of Daniel that led him to live Godly in a Godless world:

  1. DANIEL LIVED LIFE WITH A PURPOSE BIGGER THAN HIMSELF

Daniel 1:8 (ESV) 8  But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

  1. DANIEL BASED CONVICTIONS UPON PRINCIPLES OF THE WORD OF GOD

Daniel 1:8 (ESV) 8  But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

One Source said, “When a poll was given nationwide to some U.S. citizens, they were asked the question, “What are you willing to do for $10,000,000.00?”  2/3 of Americans agreed to do at least one of the following:

  • 25% abandon their entire family

  • 25% abandon their church

  • 23% become a prostitute for a week

  • 16% give up their American citizenship

  • 16% leave their spouses

  • 10% withhold their testimony & allow a murderer to go free

  • 7% kill a stranger

  • 3% put their children up for adoption”

  1. DANIEL CHOSE PURITY OVER PERVERSION

Daniel 6:1-4 (ESV)

1  It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom;

2  and over them three high officials, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss.

3  Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

4  Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.

  1. DANIEL SOUGHT AFTER GOD IN PRAYER

Daniel 6:10 (ESV) 10  When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.

Sir George Smith tells how he and his guide were climbing the Weisshorn in the Swiss Alps.  It was stormy and they were making their climb on the sheltered side of the peak.  When they reached the summit, they were filled with exhilaration.  Sir George forgot about the fierce winds.  He leaped up and was nearly blown off the mountain over the edge to the glacier below.  The guide grabbed hold of him & exclaimed:  “On your knees, sir.  You  are only  safe here only on your knees!”

TRUTH:THE POSTURE OF PROTECTION IS FOUND PROSTRATE BEFORE GOD

The truth of the matter is that many believer spend more time talking about SPIRITUAL WARFARE THAN THEY DO PURPOSING TO GAINING STRENGTH FROM GOD AND ENGAGING IN BATTLE.

My encouragement to you today is:

Ephesians 6:10-11 (ESV)
10  Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
11  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
